1994 Freedom Flame Award: Dr. Robert H. Krieble

(Washington, D.C.): On Thursday, 16 June 1994, the Center for Security Policy bestowed its prestigious “Freedom Flame” award on Dr. Robert H. Krieble, for his outstanding role in advancing the cause of freedom at home and abroad.

The “Freedom Flame” Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions toward the realization of political liberty and free-enterprise and the defense of freedom around the world. Previous recipients were former British Prime Minister Lady Margaret Thatcher and one of the United States’ preeminent strategists, Professor Albert Wohlstetter. The award was presented to Dr. Krieble at a luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington.

Robert Krieble is the co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Loctite Corporation. Throughout his long association with this highly innovative company, he was a highly regarded leader in his industry. Among other professional distinctions, Dr. Kreible holds a dozen patents in the field of chemistry.

Dr. Krieble has been no less important a figure with respect to national political affairs. During the Cold War years, he consistently lent his great talents, energy and resources to the intellectual, moral and strategic fight against totalitarian communism. His myriad contributions were of inestimable help in enabling America to stay the course during the long years of that “twilight struggle” — and, ultimately, to prevail.

Not content with that extraordinary achievement — and not willing to trust in its permanence, Robert Krieble embarked on a heroic personal effort to consolidate freedom’s victory by helping democracy and free enterprise take root throughout the former Soviet bloc. In 1988, he founded the Krieble Institute for the purpose of training individuals from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in business and political leadership. As of April 1994, over 10,000 current and prospective leaders in the old Soviet empire have successfully completed the Institute’s seminars.

Joining the Center in honoring Dr. Krieble were over 100 distinguished present and former senior government officials, foreign diplomats, top industrialists and members of the press. Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA), one of the foremost advocates for freedom in the U.S. Congress, paid a stirring tribute to Dr. Krieble:

“You have changed the lives of so many people with your generosity, your commitment to freedom, your commitment to fundamental principles, people all over the world — people you will never meet — know that you are an individual who has changed their lives for the better.”

Roger W. Robinson, Jr., former Chief Economist at the National Security Council and a distinguished member of the Center for Security Policy’s Board of Advisors, introduced Dr. Krieble. He was joined by Mrs. William P. Casey in presenting the “Freedom Flame” to Dr. Krieble.
