Republicans long warned that President Obama’s executive amnesty for millions of illegal aliens would precipitate a constitutional crisis.

That was because under the U.S. Constitution only the Congress can make or modify laws. And a president cannot constitutionally turn into lawful residents people who had violated our immigration statutes by sneaking into this country or by overstaying their visas.

But President Obama and his apologists insisted that he had not changed any laws in doing just that. Until, that is last Tuesday, when Mr. Obama told a Chicago audience the truth: “I just took action to change the law.”

Actually, this isn’t the first time he has done that – think Obamacare, for example. But this is the most serious and acknowledged instance.

He mustn’t be allowed to get away with it.
