Yesterday, a large, bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted to protect American communities from the possibility that President Obama’s bid to bring tens of thousands of Syrians into this country as “refugees” won’t simply add to our population of jihadists.

The question occurs: Do legislators really want to take such an important first step, or simply deflect popular demands for such protection?

We’ll know soon. Newly installed House Speaker Paul Ryan will either give teeth to yesterday’s vote or render it toothless in action on an upcoming spending bill.

In addition to establishing whether we will wind up admitting Syrian Islamic supremacists determined to destroy us, Speaker Ryan’s decision may determine the duration, as well as the quality, of his leadership.

The public wants no more of meaningless symbolic votes followed by actions that negate them. Does Paul Ryan?
