The Center and its Board of Regents presented the 2005 “Freedom Flame” Award on June 16th of that year to former Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle. Mr. Perle was recognized for his distinguished career in service to the Nation, throughout which he has been a staunch advocate of President Reagan’s philosophy of “peace-through-strength.”

As Amb. Bruce Gelb, the Dinner’s chairman, observed, Mr. Perle has earned a “reputation for caring deeply about things like your country’s well-being and security”.

Richard Perle is a Resident Fellow, American Enterprise Institute and a leading authority on national security, military requirements, arms proliferation and defense, and regional conflicts.

Previously he served as Chairman of the Defense Policy Board (2001-2003);  Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy (1981-87); and served on the US Senate Staff (1960-1980).

Mr. Perle writes frequently for the op-ed pages of the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The Daily Telegraph (London),  Jerusalem Post and other publications.  He appears on radio and television on matters of security and foreign policy.  He is the co- author of  “An End to Evil” and author of “Hard Line,” a political novel.
