Mark Helprin was a guest on Frank Gaffney ‘s radio show today. Helprin is a best-selling author and Senior Fellow at the Claremont and Hudson Institutes.

When Gaffney asked Helprin for his estimation of the world today, he broke it down into three power centers, the United States, Russia and China, each having its own alliances. He also pointed to four areas which he referred to as tinderboxes; The Middle East, the Balkans, North Korea and the South China Sea.

“When you have this set of four tinderboxes, and you have three roughly equal powers, or at least they’re becoming equal, then you have a very dangerous situation that existed before World War I.”

Gaffney suggested that one major difference between the three major powers is that Russia and China are working together. Helprin agreed on that point and went on to suggest that those two powers are also helping Iran.

Helprin also suggests that Russia and China use their smaller surrogate allies to tie down the United States in various parts of the world. Gaffney asked what Vladimir Putin’s goal is here. Helprin responded:

“He wants to restore the position of Russia into something that closely resembles or even exceeds the position of the former Soviet Union and the way he does this is unfortunately playing with fire. He takes risks and one of the reasons he does so is because he knows he has a very soft president in the United States who won’t do anything or in fact will help him.”

Helprin also suggested that the Baltic states are under grave threat from Russia and that if Putin desired, he could conquer them in a mere six hour blitz reminiscent of his actions in Ukraine and that this would essentially be a trip wire for the United States.

November can’t come soon enough. America needs a new commander in chief who understands these threats and will act accordingly.
