Pope Francis

Catholics the world over are celebrating the election of a new pope.  They and others who love freedom may have particular cause for jubilation because the College of Cardinals managed to select a man who, despite his nationality and background, has rejected a troubling hallmark of many Latin American priests, and most especially Jesuit ones.

Specifically, Pope Francis has been a critic of the so-called “liberation theology” movement.  This amounts to a leftist political enterprise dressed up in religious vestments.  It has been aggressively exploited by our hemisphere’s totalitarians to legitimate their radical redistributionist and anti-U.S. agenda.

Francis will have much to do during his papacy.  Let us pray that he will remain steadfast in opposing liberation theology and the damage done in its name to free peoples and the faithful.
