Inherently Vulnerable
Last April, an unknown number of assailants very nearly destroyed a transformer substation that provides electricity to Silicon Valley and much of the San Francisco Bay area.
Until recently, the fact that the attack had occurred, that its perpetrators got away and that, if had been successful, populations and businesses in northern California could have been blacked out for a long time was downplayed and hushed up.
Yesterday, authorities in New Jersey warned that the San Jose attack was just one of a number of acts of sabotage against transformers and power lines that have occurred recently in that state and across the country.
They warn the grid is “inherently vulnerable.” And, until it’s protected, so will be every American who depends on it for power – and that’s virtually all of us.
