With controversial separatist plebiscites yesterday in eastern Ukraine, the Russian boa constrictor has moved inexorably forward with its predictable strangulation of a country yearning to become formally part of the Free World.

Vladimir Putin added insult to injury last week by claiming to have removed his soldiers from threatening positions along the Ukrainian border and professing he didn’t want the plebiscites to go forward. His nearly simultaneous victory lap around Crimea, however, made plain that he actually intends to “liberate” more territory in much the way he recently seized that strategic peninsula.

The trouble is, Putin is confident he can defeat – or ride out – any serious economic sanctions or other consequences Western leaders might screw up the courage to impose. We better find a way to prove him wrong.
