No to Immigration Deform
For the second time in a week, the Republican establishment has been rocked by political earthquakes on the issue of open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens. Saturday in Texas and last night in Richmond, Virginia, the party’s base told its so-called “leadership”: Don’t go there.
First, the state GOP convention in Fort Worth rejected a gambit by House Speaker John Boehner and his allies intended to provide political cover for a bad deal on immigration reform they want to cut later this year.
Then, Boehner ally and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his reelection bid. The decisive issue was Cantor’s willingness to perpetuate the porousness of our southern border and incentivize more to cross it illegally with the promise of “paths to citizenship.”
Will the GOP establishment finally get the message?
