Pray Scotland Votes ‘Nae’
In Scotland today, history is being made. Or, perhaps, unmade. For over three centuries, Britons and Scots have forged a United Kingdom, initially through conquest of the latter by the former.
That union may be undone today by Scottish voters, however. At the moment, polls suggest that the momentum is behind those seeking independence from Great Britain.
In the course of a hotly contested campaign, much of the focus has been on the negative impact a “yes” vote would have for Scotland. Of concern for the United States, however, should be the implications for the capabilities of one of its most important and reliable allies.
For example, Britain’s submarine-based nuclear deterrent operates from a Scottish port known as Fastlane, with no obvious alternative elsewhere.
Here’s hoping the Scots say “nae.”
