I was in Hong Kong in 1997 when Britain surrendered that territory and its people to Communist China. The transaction is usually described as “The Handover.” But, as the protests now taking place there make clear, it has always been more accurate to call it “The Surrender.”

The residents of Hong Kong had known under British colonial rule a measure of freedom to which they ceased to be entitled when Chinese rule began. Worse yet, as predicted, Beijing further restricted their liberties over time. Now, even the fiction of limited representative self-government is being stripped away.

Hong Kong people deserve our support as they face the sort of violent crackdown the Communists perpetrated twenty-five years ago in Tiananmen Square. Will Team Obama do what Britain did not – and stand up for freedom?
