Finally, the Energy Department Admits We Have an EMP Problem

A year ago, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz minimized questions from Senator Ron Johnson about the threat posed by electromagnetic pulses to the U.S. electric grid. At the time, the Secretary was part of the Obama administration’s sales force for its disastrous nuclear “deal” with Iran. Accordingly, he downplayed the risk of EMPs.

But, Dr. Moniz testified earlier this month before another congressional committee during a “field hearing” in Seattle on grid resiliency. This time, the Secretary was much more forthright about the grave risks posed by EMP attacks, reflecting the grid’s actual, acute vulnerability to such disruption.

It’s outrageous that it’s taken Secretary Moniz so long to come clean about the potentially existential danger of EMP – and not just from Iran. There’s not a moment to lose in protecting tens of millions of Americans from that mortal threat.
