Disrupter-in-Chief Donald Trump’s much-criticized campaign to pressure North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to denuclearize his country – featuring U.S. military preparations to attack it, if necessary, and harsh international sanctions – has born fruit.

Kim reportedly has agreed to discuss in the next two months eliminating his nuclear arsenal and, for the duration, to stop further testing such weapons and their ballistic missile delivery systems. In the meantime, we’re told, the coercive pressure will continue.  Many of Mr. Trump’s critics have been grudgingly reduced to applauding his crisis management.

The catch is that the person with whom Kim will hold such discussions is President Trump.  That’s unmistakably a coup for the planet’s most odious thug, one that risks legitimating and perpetuating his regime while creating a dynamic that could enable the threat North Korea poses to continue metastasizing covertly.

Hold the champagne.
