Food, Water, Shelter | Potable Water Supply

Return to Resilient Communities Network Toolkit Page

Level 1

  1. Work with local water districts to ensure they have Water Supply Continuity of Operations Plans in place. Work to ensure they have backup power and a dedicated fuel supply to keep generators running.
  2. Train residents in water purification methods such as manual filtration, boiling and chlorination.

Level 2

  1. Develop plans for local water districts to provide water to those not on public water. This will involve having water tankers that can transport water to areas that need it.
  2. Develop emergency plans and processes for bottled water distribution during an emergency.

Level 3

  1. Set up emergency water supply stations at municipal public facilities. This might involve battery-operated or manual hand pumps on a local drilled well. Batteries could be recharged by solar or wind.
  2. Encourage neighborhoods to invest in at least one drilled well with a hand pump to serve the neighborhood.
