A fundamental tenant of democracy is that only eligible voters decide who governs them. If others can cast ballots as well, the electoral process and its outcomes may be corrupted.

The Obama administration has nonetheless mounted a sustained – and effective – attack on efforts by Kansas and other states to insure election integrity. Notably, it has sued them for insisting that voters identify themselves in the same way required to get on a plane, enter most government buildings or cash a check.

Fortunately, a federal judge ruled yesterday that states cannot be precluded from requiring such identification. It’s probably not the last word from the courts on the matter. But hats-off to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach for this important victory for the rule of law and the vital cause of truing the vote.
