The death yesterday of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez should be a cause of celebration for freedom-loving people throughout the Western hemisphere and around the world.  But most especially, those in Venezuela ought to be popping corks since they now may have, with our help, the chance to begin undoing the damage done to their country by Chavez over his decade-long misrule.

One might describe what that has entailed as the “fundamental transformation” of Venezuela from a longstanding pro-Western free-market democracy to a socialist kleptocracy aligned with every bad actor on the planet and the sponsor of virulent anti-Americanism throughout the hemisphere.

The Obama administration – which was appallingly friendly towards Chavez – needs now to ensure that a constitutional succession takes place in Venezuela, thereby preventing a Cuban puppet and Chavez’s chosen successor from taking over.
