Bush 41’s ominous Tiananmen legacy
Thirty-three years ago last weekend, the Chinese Communist Party murdered tens of thousands of students and others in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and elsewhere for courageously protesting its abuses, corruption and oppression.
These massacres were vivid reminders that Communists care only about power – acquiring, maintaining and wielding it ruthlessly. They are indifferent to the attendant suffering of their own people. And they certainly won’t hesitate to do the same to others’.
To the everlasting shame of President George H.W. Bush, he responded by sending his National Security Advisor, Brent Scowcroft, to assure the CCP that there would be no punishment for such egregious crimes against humanity. Instead, it would be rewarded for them with more sweetheart business deals and other “engagement” with the West.
The predictable result is today’s China – enriched, empowered and emboldened by us, and now at our throats.
