The Russian government has been charged with running for years a program for cheating in international sports events.

What’s peculiar is not that the Kremlin has continued the Soviet practice of cynically gaming the system to achieve Moscow’s goals, despite the rules. Rather, it is that more of a fuss is being made about the Russians doing it in the Olympics than about the cheating they have engaged in for decades in a vastly more serious arena: the ability to wage thermonuclear war.

The Obama administration recently, finally admitted that Russia has violated the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. By building and deploying missiles to threaten U.S. forces and allies in Europe and probably East Asia, Vladimir Putin has reconstituted a menace Ronald Reagan thought he had permanently eliminated.

Cheating is what the Kremlin does. Shame on us for ever believing otherwise.
