President Obama will sit down today with the present and future Republican and Democratic leaders of the U.S. Congress. There will be much talk of bipartisanship, cooperation and the willingness to compromise.

One of the participants, House Speaker John Boehner, put down a marker yesterday, though. If President Obama goes ahead with his promised “executive amnesty” for millions of illegal aliens in this country, the Speaker warned, he will “poison the well and there will be no chance for immigration reform moving in this Congress.”

But the voters gave Mr. Boehner and his Senate counterpart, Mitch McConnell, a chance to run that Congress in the expectation they’ll prevent an amnesty, not enact it. They should tell Mr. Obama they will defund any amnesty he declares, and send him legislation that secures the border. Period.
