Yesterday, the House of Representatives adopted a most unusual and stinging bipartisan rebuke to Barack Obama. The issue was the President’s increasingly frequent practice of abiding by only those laws that suit him – in profound violation of his duty faithfully to defend the Constitution and enforce all statutes enacted pursuant to it.

With support from 22 Democrats, the House repudiated Mr. Obama for releasing five top Taliban commanders without notifying Congress, as he was legally required to do.

It remains to be seen if this latest evidence of growing unrest within the President’s own party about the imperial and anti-constitutional character of his administration, will mark – at long last – the return of the legislative branch to its prescribed role as a real check-and-balance on executive overreach. We better pray it does.
