In the wake of the brutal jihadist murder of an elderly priest in Normandy last week, some French Muslims tried to make amends. The senior imam in Paris called for reforms and members of his faith attended masses Sunday in solidarity with Catholics for their loss.

The question is not just whether such gestures are authentic expressions of remorse and self-criticism. It’s also whether they are too late and too little for France?

The problem for the French is partly sheer demographics. Ten percent of France’s population is Muslim and many of them are unassimilated, Sharia-adherent Islamic supremacists. Among the young, the number of Muslims is as high as 20 percent and in some parts of the country 50 percent.

If past dynamics continue, a significant portion will be sympathetic to, if not actually prepared to engage in, jihad. Can France survive?
