Free the skeletons in Saddam’s closets

The Coalition’s persistence in the face of certain international criticism is paying off in Iraq. Now, even the slipperiest of the weasels who tried to save Saddam Hussein are trying to charm their way back into America’s good graces.

Arab media outlets increasingly refer to their "American brothers" who pulled the cowering tyrant from his hole.

The French president, through a spokeswoman, expressed gladness at Saddam Hussein’s capture. The German chancellor summoned the grace to do the same in person. Both appear to be agreeing to the US request that they ease their debt demands against the Iraqi people.

Too late. The skeletons are coming out of Saddam’s closet.

CIA interrogations of Saddam, or testimony of subordinates who need no longer fear his retribution, should disclose embarrassing new evidence of foreign governments’ complicity in propping up the evil regime.

Reports say former deputy premier Tariq Aziz has been blabbing of how the French and Russians had promised Saddam they would never let the UN do anything to remove him from power.

And then there’s all that Chinese upgrading of Saddam’s weapons systems that were intended to kill American and British pilots. And then there are those captured documents revealing Saddam’s paid agents of influence around the world.

Let’s open the closets, and lay out the skeletons for all the world to see. It’s time for transparency. And the truth-telling that goes with it.
