What a difference a day makes! Kevin McCarthy was the sure-bet for House Speaker. Now he’s toast.

Today, the Boehner-McCarthy gang are anointing Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman and former vice presidential candidate. Never mind that he says he doesn’t want to stop serving as Ways and Means Committee chairman.

Rep. Ryan is an able and likeable man. He may even be able to get the speakership if he does run. But that’s not the same thing as saying he should.

Republican voters do not want more of the same-old-same- old, go-along-to-get-along GOP leaders and policies. They will stay home in droves next year if House Republicans don’t seize this moment to begin the promised policy course-correction by providing, at last, fresh, dynamic and effective opposition to President Obama and his anti-constitutional agenda.
