There’s not much good news internationally these days. But Latin America has seen not one, but two, promising developments.

First, the ruling party of Argentina lost an election to a new, center-right leader, Mauricio Macri.

Then last weekend, the people of Venezuela overcame the government’s massive vote-rigging, gerrymandering, media manipulation and electoral fraud to hand the democratic opposition a decisive victory in parliamentary elections.

These triumphs of freedom-loving people were, of course, no thanks to the Obama administration. At best, it has been indifferent to their aspirations. At worst, it has been coddling their oppressors.

That must change as Argentina’s outgoing Kirchner regime and the repudiated Maduro one in Venezuela will do whatever they can to carry on. America must discourage that and stand, at last, firmly with friends of freedom – and this country – in Latin America.
