The motto of the USS Ronald Reagan is “Peace through Strength.” In recent days, it was shadowed near Japan by a Chinese submarine and buzzed by Russian bombers.

These recent incidents are just the latest indication that our strength in the Pacific is being challenged, imperiling the peace it has guaranteed there since World War II. Communist China has constructed a number of artificial islands in the South China Sea that are being converted into armed camps – with ports and airfields for asserting dominion and projecting power, again in international waters.

Beijing’s announcement last week that it is ending the Communists’ notorious “one-child” policy highlighted another ominous strategic development: China has more than 30 million young men for whom there are no women – a formula for war.

If we want peace in the Pacific, we better be increasing our strength there, now.
