Kenneth Timmerman: Iranian protests clearly aimed at regime and Supreme Leader
Kenneth Timmerman explains why protests in Iran pose new challenges to the regime’s future.
We may be witnessing the end of the repressive Iranian regime, says Kenneth Timmerman, President and CEO of the Foundation for Democracy in Iran.
“I do see lights at the end of this very dark, 41-year tunnel. I see it because there are stories inside Iran that some of the senior IRGC leadership are seeking to get their families out of the country, and seeking to get their pillaged fortunes out of the country. You saw these enormous protests recently that were brutally put down, they erupted all over the country. They were clearly aimed at the regime and personally at the Supreme Leader. Protesting the Supreme Leader used to be a red line only two or three years ago that no demonstrators would be allowed to cross. The regime is responding by outlawing half of its own allies from running for its own parliament, the Majles, in the upcoming election. That shows me that they feel themselves more on the ropes than they have been before.”
