Welcome to the global jihad. The Islamic State executioner heretofore dubbed “Jihadi John” turns out to be a Kuwaiti national who grew up in Britain in a well-off family, got a good education there and became a computer scientist. He fought in Africa with al Shabab before signing on with the Islamic State in Syria.

Mohamed Emwazi’s personal story is but the latest refutation of the official meme that only certain jihadist groups and their disaffected, impoverished recruits pose a threat. Actually, we confront a truly global movement and “jobs for jihadists” won’t defeat it.

Millions of young Muslims the world over are being inspired by Emwazi’s devotion to shariah, his terrifying jihadist feats in its service and his resulting notoriety. We need a new strategy for defeating them.
