It’s palpable.  The once-seemingly inevitable prospect that Republicans would lose control of the House of Representatives in this fall’s election to Democrats determined to impeach President Trump is perceived to have faded.  These days, poll-driven conventional wisdom is discounting the so-called “blue wave” and the political trauma it would likely inflict.

Instead, as President Trump celebrates his 72nd birthday today, he seems confident that his improved popularity, booming economy and recent domestic and foreign policy feats have made him politically unassailable.

Today’s prognosis may prove as fleeting as the previous one if Speaker Paul Ryan gets House Republicans to impale themselves, with the President’s encouragement, on a vote for amnesty for huge numbers of illegal aliens.  The base that elected them to secure the border and prevent, rather than incentivize, further flows of such aliens will feel betrayed and stay home in this fall’s elections.

Don’t go there.
