An accident yesterday involving a live-fire exercise in Nevada caused the death of seven U.S. Marines.  Senate Majority Leader has been criticized for seemingly suggesting that the incident was the result of the latest round of sequestration budget cuts.

Now, Harry Reid is not above cheap political shots and he bears substantial responsibility for the massive and damaging reductions in defense spending that have taken place over the past four years.

The truth is that – whatever the specific cause of this incident and the relationship, if any, it has to the underfunding of our armed forces, yesterday’s tragedy is likely but an early indication of the huge costs – in lives and treasure – that we will bear for hollowing out the only military we have in an increasingly dangerous world.
