Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and five other Senators are offering President Obama political cover on his unlawful executive amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

They have written him urging the President to act expansively to “improve” the immigration system as much as he can. They claim that such steps are both necessary and rooted in precedents by previous chief executives.

The spectacle of lawmakers inviting a president to rewrite laws to his satisfaction makes a mockery of the Framers’ concept of vesting in the legislative branch the sole responsibility for writing the nation’s statutes.

The Framers hadn’t reckoned, however, on Senate Democrats willing to sacrifice congressional prerogatives in the interest of achieving politically expedient objectives. The end of such constitutional malpractice in the U.S. Senate cannot come soon enough and must be repudiated.
