In the swamp that is official Washington, men and women who strive to act on principal, not political expediency, are an endangered species. That is particularly true when the President of the United States – who was elected to drain that swamp – is gunning for them.

Four decades of working with such individuals have given me a profound appreciation for the small collection of courageous legislators who constitute the House Freedom Caucus. So, it’s absolutely surreal that Mr. Trump has been turned against such lawmakers as Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, who worked tirelessly to secure the White House for him.

As the President urges his millions of Twitter followers to repudiate those who spared him from owning a disastrous health care bill, he should remember that many Trump voters think he actually owes the Freedom Caucus a debt of gratitude, big time.
