Statement from Former House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra on the House and Senate Intelligence Worldwide Threats Hearings

WASHINGTON – Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman and Chairman of the Center for Security Policy Advisory Board Pete Hoekstra issued the following statement in response to the annual Worldwide Threats Hearings held by the House and Senate Intelligence Committees:

“Why the Director of National Intelligence is leading a review of domestic violent extremists is beyond me and should be alarming to all Americans. For years Democrats insisted terrorism should be treated as a law enforcement matter, now they want to treat our fellow citizens as intelligence threats to the nation.

“I remind my former colleagues in Congress, the real threats against America emanate from beyond our border. The Intelligence Community is our frontline to provide warning against foreign threats and that cannot be done by diverting resources to spy on Americans.

“It is dangerous to our nation’s security, it is unconstitutional against our citizens, and it is wrong for Members of Congress to be pushing for the use of our spies against fellow Americans.”
