The Swedes Get Mugged by Reality
It has been said that a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged by reality. That may explain what’s happened to Sweden – the paragon of socialism that’s lately been overrun by Muslim migrants seeking to exploit its exceedingly generous social safety net and refugee policies.
In recent days, the Swedish government has reinstituted passport controls on the bridge linking it to Denmark and the continent of Europe. It has thus ended, at least temporarily, one of the European liberals’ most fixed ideas: borders must be open and asylum seekers accommodated.
If the Swedes have been mugged, not just by reality, but by gangs of rapists, thugs and potential jihadists, President Obama hasn’t yet had the same epiphany. He insists on keeping America’s borders unsecured and refugees coming, particularly from Muslim hellholes.
That may be his “reality.” But it’s not ours.
