The good news about the just-concluded TransPacific Partnership is that it excludes China. The bad news is that at least some of what it includes may be contrary to our national interests and sovereignty.

The details of this accord won’t be revealed for weeks. Still, the process by which it was negotiated and reports about its contents raise concerns.

U.S. and Asian governments were joined by various companies to negotiate the TPP in secret and with negligible transparency or accountability. Not surprisingly, they came up with arrangements that suit those parochial interests, at the expense of our nation’s.

The deal also reportedly involves commitments to the free movement of people and to transnational governing arrangements utterly at odds with our sovereign republic and Constitution.

Unfortunately, Congress can only take it or leave it. At this point, “leaving” the TPP seems advisable.
