There are few more important government jobs at the moment than the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.  That agency is on the front lines of everything from securing the nation’s borders and enforcing its immigration laws to identifying and countering threats to its airways, ports, waterways and communities from enemies foreign and domestic.

Tomorrow, a Senate committee will consider Mr. Trump’s nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to fill that job.  She has been recommended for the post by the man who was, arguably, the most capable individual ever to serve as DHS Secretary, Gen. John Kelly, now the White House Chief of Staff.

It is imperative, however, that Senators evaluate rigorously Ms. Nielsen’s qualifications, judgment and vision to establish whether she is, in fact, the right person at a moment when we simply cannot afford anything less.  More on that tomorrow.
