Throughout the Cold War, Turkey was one of America’s most important allies. With its large and ferocious military and solidly pro-Western governments, it held down NATO’s southeastern flank against Soviet aggression.

Under the regime of an Islamic supremacist named Recep Tayyep Erdogan, however, Turkey has been – to borrow President Obama’s expression – fundamentally transformed. Domestically, a secular Muslim state has been increasingly aligned with the dictates of Islam’s repressive shariah ideology. And Turkey’s foreign policy has become a nightmare with its support for jihadists and other enemies of the West and an Islamic hijra, or invasion, of Europe by Turkish-based refugees.

Murderous suicide bombings at a peace rally in Ankara may help Erdogan consolidate power in upcoming elections. If so, our once-reliable and strategically critical ally will be further transformed into a beachhead for Islamist aggression in Europe and the Middle East.
