Cuba Backs Their Puppet in Venezuela

As the first round of negotiations between the Cuban government and the Obama administration comes to a close, old alliances are being strengthened in Latin America. The eleven member states of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, better known as ALBA, have declared their support for Nicolas Maduro’s regime following the United State’s March 9^th economic sanctions against seven Venezuelan citizens.

It should have been expected that Cuban regime, along with the ALBA nations, support Venezuela regardless of the issue. It may seem surprising that they issued the statement during the negotiations with the United States; however, this follows the Cuban communist strategy of aggressive behavior towards the United States.

Cuba’s leader, Raul Castro, stated his unwavering support for President Maduro and his regime following the Obama administrations actions, saying:

Our country’s position remains unchanged. I emphasize strong solidarity with the Cuban revolution, the Bolivarian revolution, with President Nicolas Maduro and the civil-military alliance, which he leads. I reiterate the absolute loyalty to the memory of Hugo Chavez, the best friend of the Cuban Revolution

These statements from Raul Castro appear to contrast those he televised during his December 17^th speech praising President Obama’s “decision” to reopen diplomatic talks with Cuba. In reality, the Cuban regime has used such situations to appease to the American left, then immediately turn around to continuing their anti-American rhetoric.

It has long been reported that the Castro brother’s government has heavily influenced, if not directly run, both the Chavez and Maduro regimes. In addition to controlling the political sphere, the Cubans have set up and run the Venezuelan intelligence and internal security apparatus known as SEBIN.

Not only is the Cuban regime undercutting American action against Venezuela, but they are actively developing and supporting the Venezuelan regime. The Obama administration must notice that this reiteration of support by the Cuban government is a dangerous indicator with whom they are dealing with.

By bringing Cuba back into the global political sphere, we risk legitimatizing the puppet master.
