“The Chinese are claiming that the use of massive amounts of big data and artificial intelligence algorithms will allow them to isolate close to the virus, and keep them from spreading to the rest of the population. As you know, they track everyone’s cell phones, they know where you are and where you’ve been, what you’ve posted on social media, etc. So, the claim, which is an extraordinary one, is that this massive commuting power allowed them to get the virus under control. If that’s true, it would be quite a breakthrough for artificial intelligence but a very frightening one because it implies a totalitarian level of social control that George Orwell never could have dreamt of.

So, by all of the measures we are looking at in terms of highway traffic, electricity production, all the high frequency measures that are tracked by the major investment banks, the research I’m looking at, it does appear that the Chinese situation is normalizing. They would have to fake, in other words, a vast amount of data which is easy to falsify in order to convey different impressions. My guess is the data we are seeing is more or less accurate.”
