FARC: Next target of US anti-terrorism campaign?

The US indictment of six members of a Colombian narcoterrorist group for murdering Americans sends a signal that a new theater may open up in the war against terrorism.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), source of most of the cocaine smuggled into the United States, renewed its war against Colombia’s democratic government in February, and appears bent on turning that large South American country into the world’s latest narcoregime.

The Bush Administration is correct to give Colombia any and all help needed – not to bring the FARC to the negotiating table, but to destroy it as a terrorist organization.

Unfortunately, an influential senator in Western Hemisphere affairs, Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Connecticut), appears bent on sabotaging the Bush Administration’s efforts to fight drug trafficking in Latin America, and, as an obstructionist, could well save the FARC from oblivion as he once tried to save Nicaragua’s Sandinistas.
