Time for the US to help the Iranian people change their regime
The first “regime change” in the Axis of Evil may take place soon – and the United States risks being on the wrong side.
Iran is in its deepest political crisis since the 1979 revolution that installed the ayatollahs. Street protests across the country, attacks on clerics, and the shock resignation of a prominent cleric who decried the regime’s treatment of the Iranian people, are the surface symptoms of the bubbling mass unrest that precedes revolution.
Even the regime’s own elite shock troops are breaking ranks and switching sides.
The Iranian people are overcoming their fear of the mullahs and their political front men led by the “moderate” Khatami. It’s time for the U.S. to take sides.
President Bush says he wants regime change in Iran. Yet the State Department, which has been courting that regime, stands pathetically silent.
