Now Gates Tells Us

Pre-publication leaks of a memoir by President Obama’s first Defense Secretary reveal that Robert Gates was very upset with his boss and a number of his other senior subordinates.

He says Team Obama deeply distrusts the military.  It has made decisions on the armed forces’ use and funding that were deeply problematic. And it put politics ahead of the nation’s security interests.

These insights are no surprise to those who have warned of such behavior for years.  Having them confirmed by a senior member of the team, however, better arouse the rest of us to their disastrous implications.

And one wonders.  If Bob Gates had resigned over such practices, instead of staying in office and accommodating them, might his warnings have prevented the wrecking operation that is currently devastating our all-volunteer force?
