Jon Wellinghoff used to chair the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. But he may be rendering his most important service to our country now.

Mr. Wellinghoff is warning that the nation’s electric grid is extremely vulnerable. In a C-SPAN interview yesterday, he provided details about the attack last April on a transformer substation in northern California.

The military-style assault nearly took out high-voltage transformers that provide electricity to the San Francisco Bay area and Silicon Valley. Had it succeeded millions would have been blacked out, possibly for years, with untold loss of life and economic damage.

Such an attack is but one way the grid could be disrupted or destroyed.  Jon Wellinghoff’s warnings about all threats to the grid – including solar flaring – must be heeded, while there is still time to protect it.
