Biden’s Iran policy completely divorced from reality

By asking for a guarantee that U.S. will not withdraw from JCPOA, Iran’s leaders may keep U.S. out of this terrible deal.

Negotiations are said to be going well in Vienna to get the U.S. to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran (the JCPOA) and convince Iran to reverse steps it took to back out of the agreement in response to former President Trump’s 2018 withdrawal. They could result in an agreement this summer.

Not only will such an agreement reinstate the deeply flawed Obama-era deal, without holding Iran accountable for cheating on its commitments. Any terms will provide the ayatollahs with a huge financial windfall worth over $150 billion when President Biden lifts the more than 2,000 sanctions that Mr. Trump imposed on the regime. Tehran is certain to spend these funds just like it did with the $150 billion in sanctions relief it received as part of the JCPOA in 2016: increasing its military budget, support of terrorist proxies, and meddling in regional crises.

Making this worse, Iran’s President-elect Ebrahim Raisi confirmed this week that Iran will not agree to the Biden administration’s proposed “Phase Two” talks that would follow a U.S. return to the JCPOA, the purpose of which would be to strengthen the nuclear deal, and address Iran’s missile program as well as its destabilizing activities in the Middle East and support for terrorism.

Fred Fleitz served in 2018 as a Deputy Assistant to President Donald Trump and Chief of Staff to National Security Adviser John Bolton. Before his White House position, Fleitz was Senior Vice President of the Center for Security Policy. In his five years with the House Intelligence Committee staff, Fleitz was a senior aide to Chairman Peter Hoekstra and the committee’s expert on the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs.

Fleitz is the author of Peacekeeping Fiascoes of the 1990s (2002); Obamabomb: A Dangerous and Growing National Security Fraud (2016); Putin’s Reset: The Bear is Back and How America Must Respond (2016); and The Coming North Korea Nuclear Nightmare (2018). Fleitz has appeared on many American and international TV and radio programs to discuss international security issues, including Fox News, Fox Business, MSNBC, BBC, ITN (UK), Sky News, Sky News Arabia, al-Hurra, The Blaze, One America News and others. Fleitz’s op-eds and articles have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, National Review, Investor’s Business Daily, the Jerusalem Post, the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence and other publications. Fleitz holds a BA in Politics from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and an MA in Political Economy from Fordham University in New York.
