A Welcome Effort to Assure Election Integrity

Yesterday, President Trump took a long-overdue step aimed at answering a nagging question: Has there been interference with the democratic process in the recent U.S. elections? Its focus, however, is alleged domestic, not foreign, interference.

Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach will lead an advisory commission on election integrity. It will explore both alleged voting fraud and voter suppression.

We have endlessly been told that there is no voting fraud in America and that efforts to ensure only eligible, registered U.S. citizens vote disenfranchise large numbers of poor people and minorities. Hopefully, the new commission will establish the truth with respect to both points.

My guess is the panel will find that the same IDs needed to cash a check or fly or enter many buildings ought also be required for our most important civic duty: voting.
