Washington, D.C.: On August 5, 2013, the American Security Council Foundation (“ASCF”), the Center for Security Policy (“CSP”), and Frank Gaffney have announced that they have reached agreement to end litigation filed last year concerning the use of the phrase Peace through Strength.
ASCF was established in 1958 and has focused on a wide range of educational programs that address critical challenges to U.S. foreign policy, national security and the global economy. ASCF has had a profound impact on foreign policy and national security, including its work as a leading early proponent of a foreign policy strategy that was based on the need for military, economic, and diplomatic strength. Policies advocated by ASCF, including the National Strategy for Peace through Strength, were adopted in platforms of both the Republic and Democratic parties. Indeed, during his presidency, President Ronald Reagan commended ASCF for its role in developing and introducing into Congress a strategy of Peace through Strength that ultimately
helped win the Cold War.
helped win the Cold War.
For twenty-five years, CSP has pioneered the organization, management and direction of public policy coalitions to promote U.S. national security. The Center’s mission is to secure the adoption of the products of such efforts by skillfully enlisting support from executive branch officials, key legislators, other public policy organizations, opinion-shapers in the media and the public at large. From its inception, under the leadership of its President and Founder, Frank Gaffney, CSP has advocated the practice of “Peace through Strength” as a time-tested strategy for securing freedom in a dangerous world.
The work of the CSP has been widely recognized, including by President Reagan, who “applaud[ed] the Center for Security Policy for their past achievements and continuing efforts to help shape successful policy for our future.”
ASCF and CSP reaffirm their support of an American national security policy of Peace through Strength. ASCF and CSP agree in their respective capacities to promote the widest possible use of the nomenclature associated with a policy of Peace through Strength, and to encourage the practice of Peace through Strength as a guarantor of this nation’s security. In support of these shared goals, ASCF has agreed to cancel its existing trademark registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the mark PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH. ASCF plans to file for new and different trademark registrations concerning its specific programs and services.
Both ASCF and CSP are satisfied with the resolution of the dispute.
