Friends Don’t Do Business with Iran

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is off to Israel this week.  She must think her hosts haven’t noticed that her government is moving heaven and earth to do business with, and otherwise prop up, an Iranian regime whose mantra is “Death to Israel.”

In fact, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been working at least as hard to discourage Germany and other nominal friends from buying Iran’s oil and investing in its economy – much of which is controlled by the jihadist Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.  So is President Trump, who is mindful that the mullahs have also vowed “Death to America” for nearly forty years.

Fortunately, a growing number of European companies are quite sensibly deciding to keep doing business with the United States, rather than foreclose that option by flouting American sanctions on Iran. Let’s hope Ms. Merkel will do the same.
