There have been lots of earthquakes lately, and only some of them are of the geological kind.  The geostrategic ones are no less dangerous, especially when compounded by frightening aftershocks and the threat of worse to come.

The quakes in Los Angeles and Chile in the past few days that remind us many live on dynamic fault-lines have their counterparts in world events. And whether it is Vladimir Putin signaling he is not yet done with Ukraine or perhaps other neighbors, China enforcing ever-more-expansive claims of sovereign territory or an ominous Islamist election victory in Turkey, we are confronting the prospect of more tremors to come.

Unlike the real and uncontrollable earthquakes, we may be able to exercise some influence over the geostrategic ones of our time.  But will we?
