Info War: Al Jazeera budget is almost twice as much as Voice of America TV
The Voice of America (VOA) is facing a FY2003 budget cut even though President Bush has made it a priority to get the US message out to the world in the fight against terrorism.
VOA Director Robert Reilly says that the majority of VOA equipment reached its expiration date 10 years ago, and the media outlets operation needs to double current funding to win the war of ideas. VOA is setting up a new Middle East Radio Network.
The Qatar-based Al-Jazeera pan-Arab television network, which provides viewers around the world with a steady stream of anti-US programming, has an annual budget of $35 million, Reilly notes almost twice the annual budget of global TV operations for VOA.
