Dr. David Wurmser fellow at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs and CSP Senior Analyst for Middle East Affairs, speaking at the “Iran at a Crossroads” conference in Washington, compares Iran’s current situation to the final years of the Soviet Union: the collapse of the communist bloc states did not immediately lead to the fall of the regime in Moscow.
According to Wurmser, one of the decisive variables is ideology. As long as the ideology of the Islamic Republic continues to hold the governing system together, external pressure and crises alone do not guarantee the regime’s collapse.
