Days before trilateral talks between the United States, North Korea and China were set to begin over North Koreas illegal nuclear program Pyongyang declared that it has begun reprocessing more than 8,000 spent nuclear fuel rods that could be used in nuclear warheads.

This move came as the U.S. met with key regional allies South Korea and Japan ahead of its talks with the North. South Korea responded to the Norths announcement by saying that its intelligence saw no sign that North Korea has begun the reprocessing process. The U.S. has thus far not commented on the development.

Once North Korea begins reprocessing the fuel rods it, in a matter of months, grow its nuclear arsenal; currently estimated at between 2-5 bombs.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld yesterday dampened hopes of any major breakthrough at the upcoming talks. According to him, U.S. would not offer any economic reward even if Pyongyang abandoned its nuclear ambitions.
